How to Untangle and Prevent Tangled Necklaces
A calm, step-by-step method to untangle knotted chains without breaking them, plus storage and travel tricks that stop necklaces tangling in the first place.

A tangled chain can turn getting ready into a frustrating puzzle. Pull too hard and the chain can kink or snap. The good news is that almost any knot can be undone with patience and the right technique, and simple storage habits prevent most tangles. Here is how.
What you need
- A flat, light-coloured surface (a white plate or sheet of paper)
- Two fine pins or needles (sewing pins work well)
- Good lighting; a magnifying glass helps
- Optional: a drop of baby powder or a tiny amount of oil (see cautions below)
Step-by-step: untangling a chain
- Stop pulling. Tension tightens knots.
- Lay the necklace flat on a light surface. Undo the clasp so both ends are free.
- Spread the chain out gently so the knot is isolated and the rest of the chain is loose.
- Insert a pin into the centre of the knot and wiggle it gently to loosen it.
- Use a second pin to tease loops apart, working from the centre outward.
- Feed the free ends through loosened loops if needed.
- Repeat until the knot opens. Be patient; it can take several minutes.
- Smooth the chain and check for kinks.
Tip: For tight knots, a tiny amount of baby powder can reduce friction between links. Wipe it away afterwards. Avoid oil on plated, pearl or stone-set necklaces, as residue is hard to remove and can affect finishes.
When a chain kinks
Snake and herringbone chains can kink permanently. Do not try to bend them back sharply; this may crack plating or weaken the chain. Minor kinks may soften with gentle rolling between your fingers; severe kinks may need repair or replacement.
Prevention: store chains properly
- Fasten the clasp before storing.
- Hang chains on hooks or a necklace stand.
- Thread chains through a drinking straw and fasten the clasp outside it.
- Use individual pouches or compartments.
- Lay heavy necklaces flat in boxes.
See How to Store Jewellery Properly.
Prevention: travel tricks
- Straw method: thread each chain through a straw.
- Cling-film or soft cloth layering: lay chains flat between layers.
- Travel rolls with snap tabs for chains.
- Separate pouches for each necklace.
See Jewellery Travel Cases and Organisers.
Prevention: when wearing layered necklaces
- Space chains about 5 cm apart in length.
- Use chains of different weights.
- Use a layering clasp or necklace separator.

Which chains tangle most?
| Chain | Tangle risk |
|---|---|
| Very fine cable and satellite chains | High |
| Box and rope chains | Lower |
| Snake and herringbone | Low tangle risk, but kink easily |
| Beaded strands | Low, but threads can twist |

Key takeaway
Untangling needs patience, a flat surface and two pins, never force. Prevent tangles by fastening clasps, hanging or separating chains, and using the straw trick when you travel.
