Silver-Plated and Rhodium-Plated Jewellery: What to Know

Learn the difference between silver-plated, rhodium-plated, sterling silver and silver-tone jewellery, why silver plating tarnishes, and how to care for white-metal finishes.

White-metal jewellery has a cool, bright elegance that suits contemporary designs, CZ sparkle and evening looks. But "silver" on a label can mean very different things: solid sterling silver, a thin silver plating, a rhodium finish or simply a silver colour. This guide explains each so you know what to expect and how to care for it.

The main white-metal finishes

Term What it is Tarnish tendency
Sterling silver (925) Solid alloy of 92.5% silver, usually with copper Tarnishes; can be polished
Silver-plated Thin layer of silver over a base metal Tarnishes; plating can wear through
Rhodium-plated Thin layer of rhodium (a platinum-group metal) over silver or base metal Very bright; resists tarnish while intact
Silver-tone Silver colour only; no silver content implied Varies
Oxidised silver / silver-style Deliberately darkened silver or silver-toned metal Darkness is intended
Stainless steel Iron-chromium alloy Low tarnish

Silver plating

Silver plating deposits a thin layer of silver onto brass, copper or another metal. It looks like silver but behaves like a thin silver layer: it tarnishes when exposed to sulphur compounds in air, skin and some materials, and it can wear through at friction points.

Why silver tarnishes

Silver reacts with sulphur compounds in the environment, forming a dark layer of silver sulphide. Humidity, pollution, rubber, wool, some foods and some cosmetics speed this up.

Cleaning caution

Silver dips and abrasive polishes made for solid silver can strip thin silver plating. Use only a soft cloth and gentle methods suitable for plated items.

Rhodium plating

Rhodium is a hard, very reflective white metal. Rhodium plating is common on:

  • CZ jewellery, because it maximises brightness and sparkle
  • Sterling silver, to slow tarnishing
  • Some white-toned fashion pieces

Rhodium plating is usually thin and can wear at friction points, such as the inner surface of rings, revealing the metal underneath.

Sterling silver vs silver-plated

Question Sterling silver Silver-plated
Is it silver throughout? Yes (92.5%) No; silver is only on the surface
Can it be polished? Yes Only very gently; polishing can remove plating
Does it retain material value? Some Minimal
Typical marking Often "925" or "Sterling" Usually unmarked or labelled plated

In the US, FTC guidance addresses how silver content may be described, and generally treats it as misleading to call a plated item "silver" without qualification. Wherever you shop, look for clear labelling.

Silver-tone and CZ fashion jewellery

Many contemporary fashion pieces are described as "silver-tone" or "white gold-tone" and use rhodium or other white plating over brass. They can look very bright and elegant. Check the description for base metal and plating details.

Styling white-metal jewellery

  • Cool and neutral colours: navy, grey, black, white, icy pastels, emerald and sapphire tones.
  • Evening wear: CZ and rhodium shine beautifully under lights.
  • Office: polished silver-toned studs, pendants and bracelets look crisp and modern.
  • Mixing metals: silver-tone can be mixed with gold-tone intentionally. See Jewellery Colour Coordination.

Caring for silver and rhodium finishes

  1. Store in airtight bags or boxes with anti-tarnish strips to reduce exposure to air and humidity.
  2. Wipe after each wear with a soft, dry cloth.
  3. Avoid rubber bands, wool and certain papers in storage, which can contain sulphur compounds.
  4. Keep away from chlorine, swimming pools and household cleaners.
  5. Do not use silver dips on plated or stone-set pieces.
  6. Put jewellery on last, after cosmetics and perfume.

Key takeaway

"Silver" can mean solid sterling, a thin plating, a rhodium finish or just a colour. Read descriptions carefully, store white-metal jewellery away from air and moisture, and clean gently, so your pieces keep their cool brilliance.
