Buying Jewellery Online from Abroad: A Guide for International Customers

What international customers should check before ordering jewellery from another country: total cost, duties and taxes, delivery, sizing, materials rules, payment safety and returns.

Illustrated HANSINI369 cover for “Buying Jewellery Online from Abroad: A Guide for International Customers”

Imitation jewellery from India and other countries has fans all over the world, from diaspora families planning weddings to fashion lovers discovering jhumkas for the first time. Buying across borders opens up wonderful designs, but it adds questions that local shopping does not: what will it really cost, when will it arrive, will it fit, and what happens if it needs to go back? This guide walks international customers through each one.

Note: Customs rules, taxes and shipping options differ by country and change over time. Use this guide as a checklist, and confirm the details for your country with the seller and official sources.

1. Work out the total cost, not just the price

The price on the product page is only the start. Before ordering, add up:

Cost What to check
Product price Which currency is it in? Does your card convert it?
Shipping Standard or express? Is tracking included?
Import duties and taxes Will you pay them on delivery, or are they included at checkout?
Card and conversion fees Your bank may charge a foreign transaction fee
Courier handling fees Some couriers charge to process customs payments

Sellers sometimes describe shipping as "duties paid" (taxes included, nothing more to pay on delivery) or "duties unpaid" (you pay taxes and fees when the parcel arrives). If the listing does not say, ask.

2. Understand duties and import taxes

Many countries charge import duty and a sales tax (such as VAT or GST) on goods from abroad, sometimes only above a certain value. Imitation jewellery is usually classified separately from precious-metal jewellery, which can affect the rate. Because rules vary, check your country's official customs website or ask the seller for an estimate, and keep your order confirmation handy for customs.

3. Plan around delivery times

  • Compare standard and express delivery times, especially for weddings and festivals.
  • Allow extra time for customs clearance, which can add days.
  • Choose tracked shipping for anything you need by a specific date.
  • For gifts, check whether the seller can include a gift note and leave prices out of the parcel.

4. Get the size right across systems

Sizing is where cross-border orders most often go wrong:

  • Rings: US, UK, EU and Indian charts label sizes differently. Measure in millimetres and compare with the seller's chart.
  • Bangles: Indian sizes such as 2.4 or 2.6 describe inner diameter in inches and sixteenths.
  • Necklaces: check whether lengths are in centimetres or inches.

Use our Jewellery Size Guide to convert, and see Common Jewellery Measurements.

5. Check materials and local rules

Look for clear information about the base metal, plating and stones, especially if you have sensitive skin. Some markets set limits on certain substances; for example, the European Union restricts nickel release from items in prolonged contact with skin under REACH. Terms like "gold-plated", "gold-filled" and "vermeil" mean different things; the US FTC jewellery guides are a useful reference when reading descriptions. See Understanding Jewellery Product Descriptions and Nickel and Other Metal Sensitivities.

6. Understand cultural pieces before you buy

If a design comes from a tradition you are new to, read about it first. Some pieces, such as certain bangles, toe rings or necklaces, carry marital or religious meaning in particular communities. See Indian Artificial Jewellery and Regional Indian Jewellery Styles.

7. Pay safely

  • Buy from sellers with clear business details and contact information.
  • Use payment methods with buyer protection.
  • Check the website address carefully before paying.
  • Be wary of offers on social media that ask for direct bank transfers.

See How to Buy Artificial Jewellery Online Safely.

8. Read the returns policy closely

International returns can be slow and expensive. Before ordering, check:

  • Whether international returns are accepted at all
  • Who pays return shipping and any duties
  • Time limits for reporting problems
  • Whether earrings can be returned (many sellers exclude them for hygiene)

Record a short unboxing video when your parcel arrives, in case you need to report damage.

9. Protect jewellery after a long journey

Inspect pieces on arrival, store them dry and separately, and keep silica gel in boxes if you live in a humid climate. See How to Store Jewellery Properly.

Quick checklist

  • Total cost including shipping, duties and fees
  • Delivery date, with time for customs
  • Size checked in millimetres against the seller's chart
  • Materials and finish clearly stated
  • Secure payment method
  • International returns policy understood
